Hydroseeding questions and answers

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding sprays a slurry of grass seed, wood-fiber mulch, fertilizer and a tackifier (a binding agent) mixed with water onto prepared bare soil. Veasy Seeding in Meridian, for example, describes it as seed, wood-fiber mulch, fertilizer and tackifier mixed with water in a hydroseeder tank. The mulch helps hold moisture around the seed while it germinates.

How much does hydroseeding cost?

National cost guides publish ranges of roughly $0.06–$0.35 per square foot depending on the source, lawn size and slope. HomeAdvisor lists a typical project range of $650–$2,200. Boise-specific published prices are not available, so get written quotes. See our hydroseeding cost guide for the sources.

When is the best time to hydroseed in the Boise area?

University of Idaho Extension says the optimum time to seed turf is mid-August through mid-September, with spring (April–May) as the backup. See our timing guide.

How often should I water new hydroseed?

Keep the seedbed constantly moist but not saturated until the grass is established. University of Idaho Extension advises keeping the top inch of soil moist and watering a short time twice a day for the first three weeks (more often in summer). Follow your installer's instructions. See our aftercare guide.

Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod?

Usually, yes. HomeGuide's 2026 comparison lists hydroseeding at $0.06–$0.20 per square foot versus $0.87–$1.76 for installed sod. Sod gives you a finished lawn immediately; hydroseed takes weeks to fill in.

Do hydroseeding companies prepare the soil?

It varies. Some companies include grading or soil prep, while others expect the area to be prepared before they arrive. A & D Hydroseeding, for example, offers free soil-preparation advice. Ask every company exactly what is included in its quote.

Can hydroseeding be used for erosion control on slopes?

Yes. Several listed companies, including GreenAcres Hydroseeding, Clearwater Landscape and Syman, advertise erosion control or slope stabilization. Steep slopes can cost more because they need extra material and binders.

Is this website a hydroseeding company?

No. Boise Hydroseeding is an independent directory. We list companies that serve the Boise area and link to their own websites. We do not perform hydroseeding work.

How do you choose which companies are listed?

We list companies whose own website or Idaho Secretary of State filing shows they offer hydroseeding in the Boise area. Listings we could not confirm are clearly marked 'unverified'. We do not publish ratings or reviews we can't attribute to a source.

Can my company be listed or corrected?

Yes. See list your business.
